Discover the world – and settle in Germany

Juan
Engineering Consultant at the Software Delivery Center
Juan is originally from Spain. In 2022, he decided to leave his parents’ home and travel around the Netherlands. After a year there, he came to ALTEN in Germany as a V.I.E. Even after his internship program, he can imagine settling down here and starting his career.
In this interview, Juan explains why he likes it so much here.
Juan, tell me something about yourself.
My name is Juan, and I come from Spain, near Madrid. I graduated from university in Spain and then decided to travel. I went to the Netherlands. That was a big step for me, as it was the first time I had really left my parents’ house and my friends, and then I went to another country. But after my studies, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do professionally and needed some time out. I didn’t know the Netherlands and hadn’t studied the Dutch language before. The first few weeks were crazy, a lot went wrong, and I had to overcome many administrative hurdles, but after that, my stay there was a fantastic experience.
How did you end up at ALTEN Germany?
While I was still traveling, a V.I.E recruiter from ALTEN, contacted me to ask if I would be interested in coming to Germany. I had been teaching myself German for some time and had watched lots of German films and read books. I seized the opportunity and can now use and improve my language skills on site. I hope that I can stay in Germany after the trainee program. I think Coburg is a great city with lovely people.
What makes ALTEN special for you?
ALTEN operates internationally, which is reflected in our team. I also receive a lot of support in learning German and getting to know the culture. It motivates me that my colleagues and superiors see how hard I work and appreciate my efforts. You are involved in the background processes which convey trust and appreciation.
What is your daily business with us?
Our team is new and growing dynamically. Six new colleagues started with me in April. That was a relief for me, as it meant I was able to make new contacts quickly; after all, we were all in the same situation and didn’t know anyone. Our team is very international, which is particularly enjoyable. We are still in the early stages, taking programming courses and getting everyone up to the same level. The team spirit is great.
At first, I was afraid of coming to a new country, a new company, and a completely new team, but I quickly felt at home. They even organize team events to strengthen team spirit. On Friday afternoons, for example, we often play basketball together or go into town. I really appreciate the support I receive from both ALTEN and Business France. I was given a phone number I can call anytime if I have problems and don’t know who to talk to.
What advice would you give to new colleagues?
Sometimes it’s hard to move to a new country, and the process can be a bit complicated, but don’t let that stop you. The managers at ALTEN and Business France will be there to help you with advice and support. Don’t be shy, just go for it, and you’ll have an unforgettable experience.
